Overcoming Comfort Zones

STEP OUT IN FAITH

Faith begins with a step.

Peter heard Jesus say one word: “Come.” And with that, he stepped out. The boat was safer. The water was deadly. But he stepped out anyway.

Why does this matter? Because faith always feels risky. Abram leaving Haran was risky. Peter stepping onto the sea was risky. You deciding to forgive, deciding to move, deciding to start over—it’s risky.

The problem is that we like safety. We like boats. We like predictable paths. But boats never taught anyone how to walk on water. Comfort zones never built courage.

Think of how a bird learns to fly. A parent bird nudges its young out of the nest, knowing the air will feel terrifying. Yet the wings only grow strong when they are used. Our faith is the same. Growth never happens while clinging to the boat.

What step might God be asking you to take? Maybe it’s a decision about your family. Maybe it’s letting go of bitterness you’ve carried for years.

Maybe it’s starting a ministry, having a hard conversation, or daring to hope again.

Here’s the truth: storms will come. Not if, but when. You cannot avoid them. What you can decide is how you will face them. Will you cling to the boat? Or will you step out in faith?

And yes—it feels impossible. How can I risk? How can I trust? What if I sink? The answer is simple: you don’t step out alone. Peter didn’t. The call came from Jesus. The same voice calls you now.

Take the step. Don’t wait until you “feel ready.” You’ll never feel ready. Take the step anyway.Faith without risk is no faith at all
